A couple of years ago I decided that I wanted most of my strawberries to be in containers though I have a few rogue plants in the main garden area where they used to live. I looked in lots of places and finally found just what I was looking for in the section of Home Depot where you buy equipment for outdoor ponds and water features. NOT in the planting section. I found these big, round, sturdy tubs. Since I don’t have very much space at my own home for my garden (though hubby says I can dig up all the grass if I want – he’s sick of mowing) these strawberry container gardens are perfect for me. They are deep enough that the soil doesn’t dry out too quickly, but not so big and heavy that I can’t move them by myself when I decide I need to shift the garden around. They are about 2 1/2 – 3 feet across so there is enough room for quite a few little strawberry plants.
I am currently in the process of redesigning my small garden space and shifting, so these are in transit, but I thought I should take a picture or two and show you what they look like in case you are thinking of strawberry containers. They have worked beautifully for the last two years. I have cleaned out the dead leaves and they are already starting to grow nicely. All that’s left to do is add a touch of Miracle Gro top soil around the roots and decide where to put the containers! Maybe the deck?
My strawberries are rooted along the back fence. I was just wondering what I should do to get them going again. Will your method with the miracle grow and top soil work for mine in the ground?
According to Mother Earth News the answer is sunshine, mulch and a little fertilizer. All I do to mine is clear the beds and add an organic type mulch or Miracle Gro potting soil. Here is a decent link to the Mother Earth News piece on Growing Superb Strawberries if you need more information.
