Garden Update 5/29/18

Memorial Day where I live really starts the garden season in full swing.  Pretty much everything that hasn’t already been planted gets planted by the first of June.  So it is definitely time to get those last minute things in the ground.  My deck is loaded with plants still to plant.  Many are flowers, but I still need to get them in the ground if I want them to grow this season.  No post on Memorial Day and this one will be brief but here it is…

Outside…

Everything is getting bigger.  The shadows make it difficult to see, but the peas are really getting bigger.  The radishes are growing beautiful tops, but no bulbs again.  I think I might give up on growing radishes at this location.  I really think it is lack of sunshine that makes them not bulb up properly.

The radishes at the church garden are growing wonderfully and look beautiful.  They are ready to harvest now.  I took 19 of them out of the garden this week for salads and to eat sliced with salt.  They were planted at the same time and received the same care.  Here is a handful of them – Champion, French Breakfast, and Sparkler Tip.

Proof that I can grow radishes.  The thing about gardening is that every year something isn’t going to grow well.  Some years nothing seems to grow well.  It doesn’t make you a bad gardener, it just happens.  Expect it and plan for it.  Especially if you have a black thumb like I do. 🙂

I received a bunch of flowers for Mother’s Day this year which we purchased when we got home due to traveling over Mother’s Day weekend.  The deck is covered with plants ready to be planted.  The best surprise of all was at a local garden center.  A lady was pushing a shopping cart stacked with partially dead plants.  I asked her what she was going to do with them (I could see some lovely perennials in there) and when she said she was going to get rid of them, I asked her if they ever sell old plants and she said I could have the lot of them for $5.00.  Awesome!  Here is a picture of what I managed to salvage after giving away about 20 petunias to people at church.  It never hurts to ask!

Salvaged Flowers

Here is a shot of the seedlings.  I am going to try and get these flowers in the ground this week.  Most of them anyway.  We will see if they make it or not.  It was an experiment after all.

Plant Update - seedlings

The basil got transplanted into it’s new home.  Here is one of the pots of the basil.  Three varieties this year – Genovese, Purple Petra, and Pistou.

Under the Grow Lights…

I still have one tray of plants under the grow lights.  Mostly sweet peppers.  I need to get these into the hardening off stage this week as I am sick of having to manage them in the house.  It is definitely time.

This week…

Finish hardening off the indoor plants and plant the seeds.  Put all the flowers in the ground.  And add slow release Jobe’s Organic Fertilizer Spikes to the main plants in the garden beds.  I have not used this product before, but I have used their tomato spikes and really liked the way they fed the plants.  The link goes to the product on Amazon so you can see it, but again, check your local stores and you can probably get a better deal.

Harvest…

No home garden harvest this week, but I did pick some things at my beds at the community garden.

Total Home Garden so far this year:

           3 T. onion tops

           3/4 oz chives

Total Community Garden Beds this year:

4 3/8 ounces mixed Russian Red Kale and Spinach

19 radishes – mixed Champion, French Breakfast, and Sparkler Tip

Costs:

Can’t remember the exact amount, but just under $5.00 for the Jobe’s Organics Fertilizer Spikes.  I am not counting the Mother’s Day flowers I received in garden costs.

*I have an extensive collection of seeds from prior years, seeds I saved from my own garden, and seeds that I am able to obtain for free every year at events hosted in our community and our community seed library, so my seed costs are pretty low.

Total:  $54.94 for the year

Enjoy your week and get those seeds in the ground.  It’s time!  Go forth and grow!
